Answer engine optimization (AEO), sometimes called generative engine optimization (GEO), is the work of making your business clear, citable and accurate in AI answers such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. For a small UK site, that is mostly good technical SEO plus pages that answer real questions in plain English.
It is not a separate industry you buy once and forget. It is visibility work on top of a site people and crawlers can trust.
What we changed on 4dservices.co.uk
This site started as a thin single page with no structured data and little chance of being quoted. We then:
- Added JSON-LD for WebSite, WebPage, ProfessionalService, Person and BreadcrumbList so machines can see who we are and what we offer.
- Built service pages, case studies and legal pages with unique titles, descriptions and canonicals.
- Fixed the 404 page so it has its own metadata and does not inherit the homepage as if it were a valid result.
- Used a permanent redirect from www to the apex domain so link equity and canonicals stay clear.
- Left AI crawlers able to read public content. Blocking them while hoping to be cited is contradictory.
- Wrote notes and guides that answer one question each, with facts a model can quote without inventing them.
Those steps are the same ones we recommend under digital visibility and SEO and auditing.
What to change on your site
- Put the facts in text. Services, location, who you help, how to contact you. Schema should match the page, not invent claims.
- Answer one question per important page. Definitions, how-tos and decision guides get cited more often than slogan-heavy homepages.
- Keep public pages indexable. Sitemaps, robots and noindex decisions should be deliberate.
- Show experience. Case studies with a problem, what you did and what changed give AI systems something concrete to reference.
- Recheck after launches. Migrations and redesigns break citation sources the same way they break classic SEO.
What to ignore
- Chasing every new GEO acronym as a product name.
- Publishing thin “AI visibility” posts with no first-hand work.
- Expecting AEO to replace a site that still cannot be crawled or updated.
- Buying tools that promise ChatGPT rankings without fixing your own URLs.
